European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen began her Western Balkans tour in Tirana, with a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office with Edi Rama. After the meeting, the European Commission chief’s public message struck an encouraging tone on Albania’s European course, but also stressed the reforms Brussels considers decisive.
The visit began in Albania
Von der Leyen chose Albania as the first stop of her Western Balkans tour. She was received at the Prime Minister’s Office, where she held a meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Her presence in Tirana comes at a time when the European integration process continues to be accompanied by optimistic statements from the government, while the real pace of reforms remains the point by which every political promise is measured.
Public message praising Rama
After the meeting, the president of the European Commission published a message on social media in which she praised Albania’s efforts in the integration process.
According to her message, Rama “is working hard” to turn Albania’s European dream into reality, a supportive political formulation coming from Brussels at the start of this regional tour.
Justice, environment and dialogue with society at the center
At the core of Von der Leyen’s statement was the call to focus on reforms, from justice to the environment. She presented this as a key condition for the country’s progress on the path toward the EU.
Another element she highlighted was the need for strong dialogue with society, implying that the integration process is not seen only as a matter of negotiations between the government and Brussels, but also as a test of democratic standards within the country.
Brussels’ message beyond official enthusiasm
The European Commission president’s statement contains political support for the Albanian government, while at the same time bringing attention back to the areas where the EU is demanding concrete results and not only integration rhetoric.
