Requests made by the Chinese delegation for rest time and a private space during Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington have once again opened debate over his physical condition. At this point, however, these are indications and media reports, not public evidence confirming a health problem.

What was requested during the US visit

According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, Chinese officials asked that President Xi be given sufficient opportunity to rest during meetings with US President Donald Trump.

Among the requests was the provision of a private room in the White House West Wing, where Xi could withdraw between activities. According to the same reports, only his wife, Peng Liyuan, was allowed to enter that space, while other members of the delegation were not permitted to use it.

An agenda with unusual gaps

Attention has also been drawn to the absence of a working lunch between Xi and Trump on September 24. Instead, the schedule included an interval of about five hours with no official activities, which sources said had been left open for rest.

The evening of Xi’s arrival in Washington also included no official engagements. On the final day of the visit, his stay at the US National Archives lasted about 10 minutes, less than had initially been planned by the American organizers.

Suspicions, but no proof

These elements have added to speculation about the Chinese leader’s health, but they do not in themselves constitute proof of a medical problem. The roughly 14-hour trip from Beijing and the time difference may have affected the pace of the visit.

According to people familiar with the preparations, Xi’s agenda was built with consideration for how long he could remain standing, the distances he could cover on foot, and the moments when he would need to rest.

Dennis Wilder, former senior director for China at the US National Security Council, described the creation of a separate rest space for a foreign leader during a state visit as unusual.

The debate is not new

Discussions about Xi Jinping’s physical condition have circulated for years. They also gained momentum after a visit to Europe in 2019, when it was noted that he moved with difficulty and used support while walking.

In footage from the latest visit to the US as well, Xi was seen using railings and leaning on his wife while going up and down stairs. However, this is not enough to draw direct conclusions, as he has for years appeared publicly alongside Peng Liyuan and in some cases held her hand.

Analysts of Chinese politics, so far, have not reported obvious signs of a decline in his cognitive abilities during public appearances.

In the absence of an official statement clarifying these details, the space for interpretation remains broad.

For now, what is known is that the visit to Washington was organized with rest measures that are unusual for a leader of this level, and that has been enough to revive questions about Xi Jinping’s condition.
