A wave of extreme weather has struck several countries at once, from the Mediterranean to South Asia, leaving behind flooding, material damage and severe transport disruptions. The most serious situation has been reported in Greece, Turkey, India and Pakistan, where intense rainfall and strong winds have put infrastructure and emergency services under pressure.
Greece hit by the storm
In Greece, the powerful storm caused widespread damage and disruptions, especially in Athens and Piraeus. Strong winds and hail brought down trees, while scaffolding at a construction site collapsed, blocking traffic in the affected areas.
Heavy rainfall caused flooding on several road arteries. In Piraeus, tram services were suspended after power cables were damaged, once again highlighting how easily urban mobility can be paralyzed by extreme weather events.
More than 150 calls for help
By evening, Greece’s fire service had received more than 150 calls for assistance. The cases were mainly related to fallen trees, flooding and hazardous objects.
The intervention tally shows not only the intensity of the storm, but also the scale of the problems the bad weather is causing in densely populated urban areas.
Ankara flooded by torrential rain
Severe weather also hit Turkey, where heavy rainfall flooded the capital, Ankara. Dozens of streets were covered by water, while various vehicles were swept away by the current or left submerged.
Emergency crews intervened to rescue drivers and residents who were trapped. Images from the scene reflect the serious difficulties intense rainfall brings to highly urbanized areas with heavy traffic.
Ongoing crisis in India and Pakistan
In South Asia, the situation remains critical. In India, heavy monsoon rains have caused flooding and landslides in several states, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes.
The rains have also damaged road infrastructure, while in Pakistan the consequences of the monsoon continue to be severe. Flooding has engulfed entire areas, destroyed homes and farmland, while authorities continue rescue and evacuation operations in the hardest-hit regions.
The spread of these extreme weather episodes across several countries at the same time shows the scale of the crises that intense rainfall and storms can cause in just a few hours, especially where infrastructure and emergency response are immediately put to the test.
