Romania has raised its alert level after another aerial incident near the border with Ukraine, where according to the official account, a drone that had entered the country’s airspace without authorization was identified and shot down by an F-16 fighter jet. The incident comes just hours after a similar case, increasing pressure on authorities on NATO’s eastern flank.
What the Romanian authorities announced
Romania’s Ministry of Defense said that on Saturday, at around 08:22, radar systems detected a new violation of national airspace by an unmanned vehicle moving near the border with Ukraine.
According to the official statement, two F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, engaged in the Air Policing mission, were scrambled to intercept the target and carry out identification and neutralization procedures.
Second incident within a few hours
According to the Romanian authorities, this is the second incident of this kind within a very short period of time. The recurrence of the events has increased concern in Bucharest over the risk that tensions from the war in Ukraine could spill across the border.
So far, public information remains limited to the institutional announcement, and no further details have been made public about the drone’s origin or the full circumstances of its entry into Romanian airspace.
