Today’s clash in Parliament is going beyond a procedural incident. After the Socialist Party’s request for the maximum parliamentary punishment against Agron Shehaj, the Ethics Secretariat is expected to meet tomorrow to review the disciplinary measure against the MP and head of the Opportunity Party.
The Socialist Party’s request for a 60-day suspension
In a letter addressed to Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and the Secretariat for Procedures, Voting and Ethics, the Socialist Party requests that Agron Shehaj be suspended for 60 days from participation in committees and plenary sessions.
The Socialists have also asked for the case to be referred to the Special Prosecution, raising the incident from an internal parliamentary conflict to a claim with possible criminal consequences.
What is alleged to have happened on Parliament premises
According to the version presented by the Socialist Party, the incident occurred during the review of the direct loan agreement between Albania and the United States of America, within the framework of foreign military financing.
The request states that MPs had been informed in advance that the document contained classified information and that it could be consulted only in the areas designated by Parliament, after signing a confidentiality declaration.
According to the letter, Shehaj asked to take the physical copy of the document with him, but was opposed by Parliament staff.
Accusation of taking the material by force
The Socialist Party claims that the MP took the material by force and left Parliament’s offices with it.
The same request also describes another episode: a Parliament adviser, who according to the document followed him to retrieve the material, fell down the stairs and suffered injuries.
These are allegations presented in the majority’s letter and are expected to be part of the institutional review at tomorrow’s meeting.
Parliamentary ethics and the political weight of the decision
The Ethics Secretariat meeting comes in a tense political climate, where the majority is seeking not only a parliamentary sanction, but also the involvement of SPAK.
If the request is accepted, the 60-day suspension would be one of the heaviest disciplinary measures against an MP, making tomorrow’s decision a test of how Parliament manages conflicts that go beyond political debate and affect the security of classified documents.
So far, what is in circulation is the Socialist Party’s official request with its version of the event, while the first institutional decision is expected from the Ethics Secretariat.
The issue remains sensitive not only because of the political clash, but also because of how classified documents are handled inside Parliament.
