A strong seismic tremor shook Naples and surrounding areas on Thursday evening, causing panic among residents and temporary disruptions to transport. According to the preliminary assessment of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.7.
The tremor was felt in several neighborhoods of the city
The quake was recorded at around 7:46 p.m. and was felt in several areas of Naples. Shortly before 8:00 p.m., many residents went out into the streets, in a typical reaction from a city that strongly feels the seismic risk.
So far, according to authorities, no injuries or damage to buildings have been reported. Checks on the ground have begun to assess the condition of structures.
Power problems and suspension of lines
The tremors were also accompanied by problems with the electricity supply in some parts of the city. Outages were reported in the center, in the Chiaia neighborhood and in the western area of Naples.
Rail service on the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines was also temporarily suspended for safety checks. The announcement was made by EAV, the regional public transport company that manages these lines in the Phlegraean Fields area.
Panic on an evening with large crowds
The earthquake struck on an evening when the city was also experiencing an unofficial fans’ celebration for Naples’ 100th anniversary. According to organizers, more than 10,000 people took part in the procession.
The presence of a large number of people in the streets made the situation even more sensitive, although so far there have been no reports of serious consequences.
The preliminary toll remains with no reported damage and no injuries, while checks by the authorities continue to verify the condition of infrastructure and buildings affected by the tremor.
