A serious family abuse case has come before a court in the United States, where a 57-year-old woman faces charges of keeping her husband’s son isolated for more than 20 years. According to investigators, the 34-year-old was living in inhumane conditions, deprived of food, medical care and freedom of movement.
Fire as a way out
The 34-year-old was rescued on February 17, 2025, after setting fire to the house where he lived. He told authorities this was the only way to gain his freedom.
According to his testimony, he used printer paper, hand sanitizer and a lighter to start the blaze. He told police that he only wanted to get out of the isolation in which, according to his account, he had been kept for years.
Claims of extreme isolation
According to testimony given to investigators, the 34-year-old was kept locked in a 6.7-square-meter room for 22 to 24 hours a day. He said he often knew what year it was only by listening to the radio.
Investigators say that when he was found, he was 1.68 meters tall and weighed only 34 kilograms. Police allege that he had been held captive for more than two decades and subjected to starvation, ongoing abuse, severe neglect and inhumane treatment.
Food from trash bins and water from the toilet
The 34-year-old said he was usually fed one or two sandwiches a day. At other times, according to him, he was forced to eat food scraps from garbage bins and drink water from the toilet to survive.
He told investigators that he spent his days counting cars passing on the road or listening to the radio. He also said he cut his own hair, had not bathed for years and had never been to a dentist.
For bodily needs, according to his testimony, he used newspapers and plastic bottles, and had also improvised a way to remove urine through the window.
Warning signs and questions over the institutional response
According to authorities, the family had been reported as early as 2005, after the boy’s school raised concerns about his condition. Former elementary school principal Tom Panone said staff had noticed the child was very thin and often stole food or ate from garbage bins.
He said the concern had been reported, but nothing was done. This detail raises serious questions about how early warning signs were handled by the responsible institutions.
Denials and the next court step
According to prosecutors, the 34-year-old’s condition was compared to that of an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor, a strong formulation intended to underline the seriousness of the claims of inhumane treatment.
The 57-year-old, Kimberly Sullivan, has denied the charges. Her lawyer, Ioannis Kaloidis, called the claims untrue and said his client will not accept a plea deal.
The case is expected to return to court on September 4. If found guilty, the defendant could face a lengthy prison sentence.
The case has highlighted not only the serious abuse allegations within the family, but also suspicions of a failure by the mechanisms that should have intervened much earlier.
In the face of such serious allegations, criminal responsibility will be determined by the court, while the question remains open as to how such a situation could have gone unchecked for so long.
