Just a few minutes of high-intensity rain were enough for central Saranda to be covered by water, once again bringing to light drainage problems in one of the south’s most frequented areas during the tourist season.

Saranda under water after minutes of rain, the city’s main boulevard blocked

The city center was covered by water

Flooding formed along the main section of Saranda’s boulevard after heavy rainfall, as water took over the road and made movement difficult in the city’s central area.

Footage from the scene shows a problematic situation on a key urban artery, right at the height of holidaymaker and tourist traffic.

Drainage manholes could not handle the flow

One of the main reasons for the flooding is linked to the malfunctioning of drainage manholes, which failed to remove the water and instead allowed it to rise to the surface.

The incident raises questions about the condition of the city’s drainage infrastructure, especially at a time when the high influx of tourists makes any traffic blockage even more sensitive.

Difficulties for cars and pedestrians

The flooding on the boulevard caused obstacles for vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement, while the weather worsened within a very short time.

In a coastal city that faces increased pressure during the summer, such episodes expose how quickly a heavy downpour can turn into a public problem.

The storm also hit other southern areas

Downpours also hit Delvina, Ksamil and Gjirokastra, where the rainfall was accompanied by hail, thunder and strong lightning strikes.

In some southern areas, the intense rainfall continued, while weather conditions changed within just a few minutes, affecting a wider area than Saranda alone.

The sudden deterioration of the weather and the drainage problems in Saranda turned a short spell of rain into a flooding episode in the heart of the city.

For a tourist center that faces a high flow of visitors every summer, the functioning of basic infrastructure remains the simplest and most visible test for local institutions.
