Kosovo remains in political deadlock even after the June 7 elections, while the institutions have still not been made functional. In this climate, acting President Albulena Haxhiu has put forward another political attempt by inviting party leaders to a joint meeting.
Meeting called for August 18
According to the invitation sent by Haxhiu, the meeting is expected to be held on Tuesday, August 18, at 09:00.
In the official version, the purpose of this meeting is to contribute to political and institutional dialogue on overcoming the current situation and making the institutions functional. The move comes at a time when constitutional deadlines have already passed and the crisis remains unresolved.
Move follows LDK position
Haxhiu’s invitation comes after the Democratic League of Kosovo declared its withdrawal from demands for co-governance with the Vetëvendosje Movement.
LDK has also proposed the election of a consensual president, a signal that has opened another axis of discussion on the country’s political scene.
Kurti calls for discussion on specific names
On Friday, acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti also publicly welcomed LDK’s position and announced that he had invited the three leaders of the opposition parties to a meeting.
According to Kurti, the time has now come to discuss specific names for the post of president, indicating that the focus of negotiations is shifting from the political formula to concrete names.
Assembly still not constituted
Despite the result of the June 7 elections, Kosovo’s institutions have still not been made functional.
The constitution of the Assembly has not been completed because the Vetëvendosje Movement, although according to reports it had the numbers, was seeking time to reach a political agreement on the election of the president.
Meanwhile, at midnight on August 7, the constitutional deadline for constituting the Assembly expired, further deepening the crisis and raising more questions about a way out of this institutional deadlock.
The announced meeting may serve as a new test of the parties’ willingness to compromise, but so far the blockage remains a political and institutional fact.
Beyond statements and invitations, the key question remains whether Kosovo’s political class will produce the majority and consensus needed to bring the institutions out of paralysis.
