West Nile virus is once again putting pressure on the health system in Greece, where 47 new cases and four deaths have been reported in just one week. The data were made public by the Hellenic Public Health Organization, while this year’s toll is worsening significantly.

Weekly toll adds to concern
According to the weekly report of the Hellenic Public Health Organization, 47 new cases of West Nile virus and four deaths were recorded during the period August 12-19.
The figures from the past week show an increase that keeps concerns over the spread of the virus alive, while Greek health authorities continue to report new cases.
Where the latest cases were confirmed
According to the official version of the report, the new cases were confirmed in the municipalities of Dionysos, Kallithea and Petroupoli in the Attica region, as well as in the municipality of Alexandria in Imathia.
These areas are being added to this year’s map of cases, at a time when monitoring infections remains key to understanding the true extent of the situation.
157 cases and 13 deaths since the start of the year
The total toll from the start of 2026 through August 19 has reached 157 cases and 13 deaths, according to data published by the Greek public health authorities.
These figures place the situation at a level that requires increased attention, especially for the most at-risk groups and the areas where infections have been confirmed.
Dozens of patients in hospital, 23 in more serious condition
At present, 42 patients are being treated in hospitals, while 23 of them are in intensive care units, according to the report.
The number of hospitalizations and patients in intensive care shows that behind the weekly tolls there is a concrete burden on the health service.
The increase in cases and deaths within one week is turning West Nile virus into a serious public health issue in Greece.
For now, the official toll shows a worsening situation, with new spread and dozens of patients receiving hospital treatment.
