Thessaloniki was hit by a strong wave of bad weather on Wednesday evening, with intense rainfall that within minutes flooded road arteries and significantly worsened traffic in the city. The most visible problems were reported in the center, where lines of vehicles and delays became the main concern of the evening.

Rain began with high intensity
The heavy rain started at around 21:30 and quickly spread across a large part of Thessaloniki, from the western areas to the sectors near the airport.
The storm was accompanied by strong winds and frequent lightning, making the situation even more difficult for movement on the roads.
Roads covered by water and traffic difficulties
In several areas, the large amount of water covered the roads to the point that major sections were practically turned into flowing streams.
Drivers faced slow movement and major difficulties, while in the city center long lines and considerable delays formed.
Impact on activities in the city as well
The bad weather did not hit only traffic. Some cultural activities taking place at those hours were interrupted because of the weather conditions.
This showed that the deterioration in the weather had an immediate effect not only on road infrastructure, but also on the city’s public life.
Extreme conditions also affected Kozani
Beyond Thessaloniki, the severe weather also hit Kozani, in Western Macedonia.
There, heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds caused damage, brought down trees and temporarily left some villages without electricity.
Instability continues today
Forecasts show that the weather is expected to remain unstable in Thessaloniki and other areas of Central Macedonia during the day today.
There remains a possibility of more rain and storms through the afternoon hours, keeping the risk of further traffic difficulties and local problems high.
The evening storm once again highlighted how quickly intense rainfall can lead to urban gridlock, especially in high-traffic areas.
For residents and drivers, the night in Thessaloniki was marked by sudden flooding, heavy traffic and uncertainty for the hours ahead.
