The public clash between the government and voices from the justice system over judicial funding has reopened, this time with a direct reaction from Edi Rama to a judge’s statement. The prime minister presented the comment as proof of a problematic understanding of independence and of the way the state budget is viewed.

Rama clashes with a judge over the justice budget: ‘Unbelievable’

Rama’s reaction on social media

Rama posted on social media a photo with a judge’s statement, which says: “We have our own budget purse. We are not taking from other people’s purses. In short, we are not being allowed to take from our own purse.”

Above this phrase, the prime minister wrote: “Unbelievable, but true that a judge understands independence this way and sees the budget of the Albanian state this way…”

Debate over justice funding

The head of government’s reaction comes amid debates over the financing of the justice system and the relationship between institutional independence and control over public funds.

At the core of the clash is how the judiciary’s budget is interpreted: as part of the state’s overall budget or as a fund that, according to this position expressed by the judge, should be treated as a separate “purse.” It was precisely this reading that Rama publicly opposed.

The tension with judges has not ended

This was not Rama’s only intervention on the issue. According to reactions made public this Sunday, he also made three other comments related to judges’ salaries.

This shows that the clash is not limited to a single isolated statement, but is expanding into a broader debate over privileges, independence and the way public money is administered in the justice system.

For now, Rama’s public reaction once again shifts the debate from the technicalities of the budget to the real relationship between the executive branch and justice institutions.

It remains to be seen whether this clash will be accompanied by institutional clarifications on the financing of the judiciary, or whether it will remain at the level of political messages and reactions on social media.
