The investigation into the death of Giorgos Mazonakis has entered a phase in which the main weight is falling on digital evidence. At the center of interest for the Greek authorities is a photograph taken at the clinic, later deleted from the phone and, according to preliminary forensic findings, shared with a recipient who has not yet been identified.
A deleted photo is being seen as a key link
According to developments so far, investigators have seized data from digital devices and are reading it in chronological order to reconstruct the critical minutes of the incident at the private clinic in Kolonaki, Athens.
At the center is a photograph taken at 14:43:36, in which Mazonakis is seen lying on the clinic bed, with medical equipment in operation. What has deepened suspicions is linked not only to the content of the photo, but also to the fact that digital traces show it was shared with another person, whose identity remains unknown.
Two photographs and a video were deleted before statements to police
The forensic examination found that two photographs and a video involving Mazonakis were created on the same day. All three files were later deleted, before Ioanna Gaka appeared at Kypseli Police Station to give her statement.
The second photograph was taken at 14:45:22 and carries the same geographic data matching the clinic’s location on Karneadou Street. Between the two photos, a video created at 14:43:55 was also found, and it too appears to have been deleted at the same time as the second photograph.
Two arrested doctors are at the center of the case
Ioanna Gaka, a Greek doctor who was at the clinic when Mazonakis underwent plasmapheresis and suffered cardiac arrest, has stated that she was the one who had proposed this treatment.
She and her husband, doctor Ilias Theodoropoulos, are considered among the key figures in the case. According to the latest developments in the investigation, both have been arrested and face a possible charge of intentional homicide. So far, according to published information, there is no evidence that the photograph was sent to Theodoropoulos.
Phones and communications are being closely examined
Authorities are reviewing not only Gaka’s phone, but also the mobile devices of three clinic employees, as well as the institution’s computer. Investigators are searching for messages, phone calls, photographs, videos and any other communication that could help clarify what happened during the decisive hours.
One of the most sensitive points of the investigation remains the decoding of the phone data: to whom the photograph was sent, through which application, and whether it was accompanied by any message. This part of the case file could determine whether this was simply a passive act or a chain of communications with significance to the incident.
The possibility of an unidentified substance is also being examined
Alongside the digital evidence, investigators are also examining the possibility that Mazonakis was administered a substance before or during plasmapheresis. So far, no specific drug or compound has been identified.
Answers are expected from toxicological analyses, which may clarify whether any substance was used and, if so, how it was administered and under what conditions the medical procedure was carried out.
At this stage, the greatest weight of the investigation appears to rest on the traces left on the phone and on the photograph sent to a person who has still not been identified.
For the Greek authorities, these elements may be decisive in understanding what really happened at the clinic, beyond the versions presented so far.
