The 124th day of protests in Tirana ended in tensions after a group of citizens clashed with police forces near the Ring Road, close to the “Agimi” apartment buildings. The incident occurred at the end of the gathering, on another evening when the protesters’ political demands remained the same: the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, a transitional government, and early elections.

Clash after the speeches ended

According to the version reported by the organizers and developments on the ground, the tensions began after protesters concluded their nightly speeches and marched from the Prime Minister’s Office toward the Police Directorate.

During this movement, a group of citizens tried to block the road near the Ring Road for several minutes, close to the “Agimi” apartment buildings, leading to a physical confrontation with officers on the scene.

Police intervened to disperse the group

After the incident, police intervened and managed to disperse the group, while a large number of officers were deployed in the area to keep the situation under control until the gathering ended.

The increased police presence once again showed that the management of these protests is taking place under a strong security regime, in a tense climate that has lasted for months.

Political demands remain unchanged

At this protest as well, the organizers repeated their demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Rama and the entire political class.

They also again called for the creation of a transitional government and the holding of early elections, keeping the focus on the political crisis that, according to them, cannot be resolved through the current institutional formulas.

More than four months of consecutive protests

Thursday’s gathering is part of a series of protests that has continued for more than four months in Tirana.

Beyond the number of days and the nightly ritual of gatherings, the incident near the Ring Road showed that tension on the ground remains present and that any march can produce direct confrontation with police.

The latest evening’s clash adds another episode of tension to a protest that is stretching out over time and maintaining the same political focus in opposition to the government.

So far, at the core of the gatherings remains the unchanged confrontation between the protesters’ demand for political change and the response of state structures on the ground.
