The Civil Protection mechanism of the Municipality of Rhodes, regional authorities and the Fire Department have been placed on full alert due to forecasts of heavy rain and storms.
The Dodecanese region has been placed under an orange alert, prompting local structures to activate Civil Protection posts and increase field checks.
First rainfall, no problems according to the municipality
According to Rhodes Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Michalis Thomatos, the first morning rainfall, which hit the city of Rhodes and other parts of the island with particular intensity, did not cause problems.
However, this is a preliminary assessment by local authorities, while municipal services have remained in the field to monitor how the situation develops.
Patrols and checks at problematic points
Workers from local services are patrolling different areas of the island, checking drains and points where heavy rainfall could create difficulties.
This response shows that, despite reassuring statements, there is real concern about the impact the storms could have on local infrastructure and on the most exposed areas.
Special attention to lightning
According to local authorities, the focus is not only on rainfall, but also on the electrical activity accompanying the storms.
Thomatos stressed that lightning is considered an additional risk, as it could cause fires, especially in forested and rural areas, further complicating the management of the emergency.
