Protest at the Prime Minister’s Office: Meta backs lecturers from prison after chairs are overturned

Meta’s reaction from prison

Former President Ilir Meta published a message from prison, in which he described the lecturers’ protest as a strong expression of social conscience.

In his reaction, Meta thanked the participants for what he called their courage, dignity and stance in defense of education and against the departure of young people from the country. He called for support for lecturers, high school students and young people, closing his message with the phrase: “Without youth, there is no Albania.”

What happened at the protest

The gathering took place in Tirana, after which the protesters marched toward the Prime Minister’s Office. There, they overturned the chairs set out for dialogue and tore up banners carrying the same message.

The action was accompanied by calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, shifting the protest from discontent over education issues into a direct political confrontation with the government.

After the invitation to dialogue

The protest came after the prime minister had made an invitation for dialogue. But the way the participants reacted showed a clear rejection of this format and distrust toward the approach offered by the government.

The overturning of the chairs outside the executive headquarters became the main symbol of this stance: not as acceptance of institutional communication, but as a public contestation of it.

Education and the climate of discontent

At the center of the protesters’ message and Meta’s reaction was concern over education and the departure of young people from Albania. This issue is returning frequently in public debate, especially when protests cast doubt on the real effect of official calls for dialogue.

Once again, the clash outside the Prime Minister’s Office showed that part of the public discontent is no longer being channeled into government-curated roundtables, but into symbolic acts of rejection and direct political demands.

Meta used the protest to articulate political support from his cell, while the events outside the Prime Minister’s Office turned an invitation to dialogue into an open scene of distrust toward those in power.

It remains significant that instead of the dialogue announced by the government, the final image was that of overturned chairs and a protest calling for the prime minister’s removal.
