After the killing of a 49-year-old woman in Vitomiricë, Peja, the Assembly of Kosovo convened in an extraordinary session and approved, with 67 votes in favor, a resolution addressing violence against women, cases of femicide, and the role of institutions in preventing these crimes. The move comes at a time when public pressure is focused on the state’s real response, not only on statements made after tragic events.

After the 49-year-old woman’s killing, the Assembly of Kosovo approves a resolution on protecting women

The resolution was approved with 67 votes in favor

During the extraordinary session, lawmakers approved a resolution that addresses not only the latest case in Peja, but also other killings of women, domestic violence against women and children, as well as the institutional responsibility for preventing such cases.

The Assembly’s decision once again shifts attention to how institutions respond to reports of violence and to the fundamental question of whether existing mechanisms are functioning or are activated only after tragedy strikes.

Focus: preventing gender-based violence

According to the content of the resolution, the emphasis is placed on preventing gender-based violence, strengthening institutional mechanisms, and protecting the lives and safety of women.

The document underscores that the response to domestic violence must be immediate and that every report must be treated seriously, so that dangerous situations are not allowed to escalate to fatal consequences.

Institutional responsibility remains central

The resolution also addresses the responsibility of institutions to guarantee protection for victims and improve inter-institutional cooperation.

According to the version approved by the Assembly, the aim is for women and children to have real access to support and protection. However, the main challenge remains practical implementation, as public doubts most often arise precisely around the institutional chain when cases of violence end in loss of life.

The debate does not end with the resolution’s approval

The approval of a resolution formalizes the political response, but it does not in itself solve the problem of violence against women and possible failures in prevention.

At the center of the debate remains whether institutions will turn this position into concrete measures, measurable accountability, and effective protection for women at risk.

The latest case in Peja has forcefully brought back into focus the issue of women’s safety and the gaps that may exist in the institutional response to domestic violence.

The vote in the Assembly sends a political message, but the real test remains the ability of institutions to intervene in time and protect lives.
