Plenary session opens with clashes in Parliament as opposition blocks the podium and interrupts Peleshi

Tension from the first minutes

The plenary session had been scheduled to begin at 10:00, in a fraught political climate and with increased security measures around Parliament following the announced protest.

The clash began as soon as Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi took the floor to read the agenda. At that moment, Democratic Party MPs banged on the desks, causing loud noise and making it almost impossible for the session to continue normally.

The podium was blocked with posters

Opposition MPs then approached the podium holding posters and blocked the space from which the session is conducted. The scenes in the chamber once again showed that Parliament is operating amid a permanent crisis of political confrontation, where parliamentary procedure remains exposed to strong disruptions.

The official version of events did not immediately provide a full clarification on how the session would proceed beyond the moment of the blockade, while the tension in the chamber appeared immediate and organized.

Parliament under tight security measures

Even before the session began, police had sealed off the perimeter around Parliament, according to official announcements, because of the announced protest. The increased presence of security forces outside the institution and the clash inside the chamber further underscored the climate of polarization.

The situation brings renewed attention to how parliamentary life is managed in moments of tension, when the agenda often remains secondary to political actions and the institutional response.

This Wednesday’s session thus began with the familiar scenario of blockades and noise, once again turning Parliament into an arena of political confrontation.

Instead of parliamentary debate, attention focused on the interruption of proceedings and on the symbolism of force that the sides are choosing to display publicly.
