Another move at the highest levels of government was reported this Thursday, with Besfort Lamallari leaving the helm of the Interior Ministry. According to information confirmed in the media, the post is expected to pass to Ervin Demo, who until now has served as minister of Local Government.
Change in one of the cabinet’s most sensitive posts
The departure of the interior minister comes as a decision taken by Prime Minister Edi Rama, in one of the ministries most exposed politically and institutionally.
At this stage, the reasons for this change have not been made public, while Ervin Demo’s name is circulating as the expected replacement at the head of the Interior Ministry.
Who is Besfort Lamallari
Lamallari had earlier taken over the leadership of the Ministry of Justice in September 2025, while he had previously also held the post of deputy interior minister since October 2017.
In public administration, he has built a profile on issues related to security, justice and the fight against organized crime, areas usually presented by the government as part of its institutional record.
His role in EU negotiations and emergencies
Since 2020, Lamallari has represented Albania as negotiator for Chapter 24, “Justice, Freedom and Security,” in the process of negotiations with the European Union.
His career has also included involvement in managing emergency situations. In November 2019, he served as a delegate of the government and the Interministerial Committee for Civil Emergencies for the coordination of search-and-rescue teams after the earthquake in Durres, while in April 2020 he was involved in managing the situation created by COVID-19 in the Shkodra region.
Formalization of the new name expected
Ervin Demo, who until today has held the post of minister of Local Government, is expected to take over the leadership of the Interior Ministry.
It remains to be seen whether there will be an official announcement with explanations for this rotation, at a time when cabinet changes are usually read not only as administrative moves, but also as political signals within the governing majority.
So far, what is known is the change of name at the head of a key ministry, while the reasons and the real weight of this move still remain publicly unclear.
