Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced another major plan in education, this time for the opening of four new universities in the country. The announcement came in a public appearance, but so far it remains at the level of a declaration, with no deadlines, no publicly disclosed costs and no details on how these institutions will be established.
The four cities mentioned by Rama
According to the prime minister’s statement on the “Flasim” podcast, the new universities are expected to open in Fier, Vlora, Korça and Tirana.
Rama said that in Fier the goal is a university of excellence for medicine, in Vlora a general and larger university, in Korça a university focused on technology and artificial intelligence, while in Tirana another general university is planned.
The promise for Fier and the announced agreement
For the project in Fier, the head of government spoke of an agreement that, according to him, will be signed with one of the largest networks in the world, based in London.
According to Rama’s account, part of this agreement will also be a joint plan to open the University of Medicine in Fier. So far, the name of the network, the terms of cooperation and the financial commitment that will be required from the Albanian state have not been made public.
Many announcements, few details
The announcement immediately raises questions about academic standards, teaching staff, infrastructure and financial resources, especially when it comes to four new universities at once.
In the absence of supporting documents, the decision remains for the moment a political announcement that should be viewed beyond the government’s usual enthusiasm for major projects. There is still no information on whether these institutions will be public, with international partnership, or under another administrative formula.
Higher education faces the test of implementation
Opening new universities is a significant promise, but the real test will be implementation: licensing, programs, faculty, financing and the actual needs of the labor market.
For the moment, the government has put the map of four cities on the table. The most important part, that of transparency and feasibility, remains unclear.
The prime minister’s statement once again puts higher education at the center of public debate, but without concrete documents and without figures, the project remains in the political promise stage.
