The hearing has begun in The Hague for the announcement of the first-instance judgment against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, one of the most sensitive proceedings for politics and justice linked to the war in Kosovo. At the opening of the session, the trial panel also drew attention to the climate surrounding the proceedings, publicly raising the issue of witness intimidation.
The hearing entered the judgment phase
The Kosovo Specialist Chambers opened the hearing for the announcement of the judgment against the four former KLA leaders. It is a first-instance ruling, following a process that began on April 3, 2023.
The case has drawn high political and public attention, while the moment of the judgment announcement is expected to carry weight not only legally, but also in the broader debate over the legitimacy, perception and consequences of this process.
The judge reviewed the course of the proceedings
At the start of the hearing, Judge Charles Smith presented a brief summary of the trial’s progress. According to him, the process has gone through more than three years of proceedings up to this stage of the announcement of the decision.
It was precisely in this summary that an element serious for the standard of a fair trial was highlighted: according to the judge, the trial took place in an atmosphere of witness intimidation.
Claim of withdrawals and changes in testimony
According to the version presented in court by Judge Smith, some witnesses withdrew or changed their testimony because of concerns for their personal safety and that of their family members.
This assessment, made public by the trial panel, sheds light on the pressure that, according to the court, accompanied the proceedings. At the same time, it remains an element of particular weight for how all the evidence admitted in this case will be read.
The court emphasized the witnesses who appeared before it
However, the judge underlined that a large number of witnesses testified during the proceedings. According to him, they did so “with courage and determination.”
Such a statement in court shows that, despite the problems raised about a climate of intimidation, the court is presenting the proceedings as a procedure in which testimony was given on a considerable scale and played a central role in the examination.
The announcement of the judgment against Thaçi, Veseli, Selimi and Krasniqi marks a key moment for a process that has long remained at the center of attention in Kosovo and beyond.
