Veliaj-Rama: From Allies to Clash? Prison Letter Deepens Doubts in the Socialist Party

A visit by the justice minister to Fier prison, officially presented as a check on the pretrial detention conditions of Erion Veliaj, has produced more doubts than clarifications. On one hand is the official version describing good conditions; on the other, Veliaj’s public letter raises claims of political pressure and messages coming “from above.”

Veliaj-Rama: From allies to clash? Prison letter deepens doubts in the Socialist Party

The visit that left more questions behind

The justice minister went to Fier prison to meet Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj. According to his statement, the purpose was to see the conditions in which the detainee is being held.

The meeting, however, did not take place in the cell, but in the office of the prison director. There, according to the official version, the premises and conditions were inspected, but not the specific place where Veliaj is being held. This has left open the basic question: on what concrete verification was the guarantee about detention conditions based?

Veliaj’s letter and claims of pressure

In a public letter, Veliaj claims that the visit was not simply institutional in nature. According to him, the minister had gone there to convey several political messages to him.

Veliaj claims he was asked to resign from Tirana City Hall, leave the post to Arbër Hajdari, admit that he had helped the protests against Rama, and give up his defense lawyer. The authenticity of the letter has been confirmed by lawyer Plarent Ndreca.

Two versions of the same event

For now, two completely different narratives are circulating in public. One, the official one, speaks of good prison conditions and an administrative visit. The other, Veliaj’s, describes political interference conveyed through the minister.

Neither side has so far provided an explanation that would definitively put the doubts to rest. For precisely this reason, the issue cannot be reduced to a formal statement about the furniture or to a political denial without additional evidence.

The relationship with Rama and the silence in the Socialist Party

Veliaj’s claims fuel suspicions that his relationship with Edi Rama may have entered a phase of confrontation. These questions have also been heightened by Veliaj’s transfer from Durrës to Fier, which has been accompanied by claims of harsher conditions and a stricter regime.

In this climate, the silence of the Socialist Party has not gone unnoticed. When it comes to the prime minister and the mayor of Tirana, the absence of a political reaction appears more like a position than simple waiting.

If Veliaj’s claims are proven, then this would be an episode that raises serious questions about the use of institutions for political purposes.

So far, Rama has not spoken publicly about this alleged clash. But in such cases, silence also remains part of the story.
