Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted after the publication of the annual progress report, presenting the document as a positive signal for Albania’s path toward the European Union. However, even in his statement, it was acknowledged that beyond the government’s optimistic language, the country still has a long list of tasks and unresolved problems in ყოველდღian life.

Rama after the progress report: Albania closer to the EU, but challenges remain open

Rama presented the report as a positive assessment

According to the prime minister’s statement, Albania was rated higher than before in the progress report. Rama called this a “moment of pride” and another step forward toward the goal of EU membership.

He described the report as an encouraging “report card” from the European Commission, using it as an argument to stress that the country is closer than ever to the door of the European Union.

Obstacles are acknowledged, although the emphasis remains on the optimistic message

Despite the positive tone, Rama said that the tasks still ahead remain numerous. He underlined that the deadlines of the negotiations are narrowing and that the time to meet the requirements is not unlimited.

This acknowledgment shows that the report does not erase the burden of reforms or the issues that continue to accompany the integration process, regardless of how it is being politically presented by the majority.

The government speaks of attention to everyday problems

In his reaction, Rama said that the report’s assessment does not make the country’s everyday problems any smaller or any less current. According to him, these issues have had and will continue to have the attention of the government and the parliamentary majority.

He added that the report’s high assessment should serve as motivation to do more and to do things better, a wording that suggests the executive itself accepts that the current results are not enough.

Political message with a call to avoid divisions

At the end of his reaction, Rama said that “the EU door is open” and that the possibility of entry is more real than ever. Alongside this, he also used a political message against what he called divisions, resentments and jealousy, which according to him have hindered Albania in the past.

The prime minister’s statement comes at a time when European reports are often used in the domestic debate as proof of success by the government, even when the documents themselves suggest that the road toward the EU remains conditioned by concrete reforms and measurable results.

The progress report gives the government a political argument to speak about closer alignment with the EU, but it does not remove from the table the fact that European standards are measured by implementation and not only by statements.

Between official enthusiasm and the reality of everyday problems, the burden of proof remains on Albanian institutions.
