Another major forest fire has hit southwestern France, raising alarm again in the Landes area, where flames have engulfed thousands of hectares. According to local authorities, more than 400 residents have left their homes, while conditions on the ground are making intervention difficult.
Flames spread rapidly in Landes
The new fire broke out in the vast Landes forest and has burned about 4,000 hectares of land. The Landes prefecture described the situation as “unfavorable,” wording that indicates authorities still do not have the fire front under control.
According to the official account, strong winds and the constant shifting of their direction have hampered firefighters’ efforts to contain the spread of the blaze.
Hundreds of residents evacuated near Luglon
According to authorities, about 400 residents of the commune of Luglon have been evacuated and temporarily relocated to a nearby town.
Fire chief Romain Moutard said the wind had changed direction and that the fire was advancing toward Luglon, about 25 kilometers northwest of Mont-de-Marsan.
Other fire outbreaks remain active in France
The difficult situation is not limited to Landes alone. In western France, a fire in Gerand was reported as “under control,” but the danger forced the evacuation of about 2,000 campers from the area.
South of Rennes, another outbreak has burned about 2,250 hectares. Authorities say the situation has stabilized, but the fire is still not considered to be fully under control.
In Pas-de-Calais as well, fires that broke out on Wednesday near a tourist area on the northeastern coast were described as “contained,” but still active. This means the danger has not fully passed, despite the reassuring language used by official structures.
A harsh summer for France’s forests
These fires come after a difficult period for France. At the end of July alone, about 37,000 hectares of forest burned in Landes.
In neighboring Gironde, another massive fire had spread across more than 400,000 hectares, making this summer’s season one of the most problematic for forest fires in the country.
The figures reported so far point to a worsening situation in several French regions, with evacuations, large burned areas and several outbreaks that remain active.
Beyond authorities’ statements about areas being “stabilized” or “contained,” the overall picture remains that of a fire front that has still not been closed.
