Arsenal have opened the new season with a clear message for their rivals. The London side defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield, in a final where the difference on the pitch was visible early and never came into question again.
Immediate blow and quick lead
The match began in the worst possible way for Manchester City. Arsenal needed only 25 seconds to take the lead, when Calafiori found the net and immediately set the tone for the final.
The early goal shook the side led by Enzo Maresca, which failed to regain control in the minutes that followed. Arsenal continued to apply pressure and made full use of their psychological advantage.
Havertz doubles it, City without an answer
The second blow came in the 28th minute. Kai Havertz punished City again and made it 2-0, taking Arsenal significantly closer to the trophy before the break.
The picture on the pitch was clear: Mikel Arteta’s side looked more organized, more aggressive and more precise, while City could find neither rhythm nor response.
Odegaard settles it at the start of the second half
The second half began with the same script. Just seconds after the restart, Martin Odegaard scored the third goal and effectively ended any debate over the winner of the trophy.
At that point, Manchester City looked completely powerless to change the course of the match. Arsenal managed their advantage without wavering until the final whistle.
Season-opening trophy and a signal for the league
With this 3-0 victory, Arsenal lift their first trophy of the season and begin the football year where they left off last season: with another success.
The London side now head into the start of the league campaign with high morale, where they will face Coventry, while Manchester City must quickly turn the page before their match against Bournemouth.
The Community Shield does not decide the fate of the season, but the 3-0 result and the manner in which it came are a strong signal.
