A major wildfire in Belgium is becoming a threat to German territory as well. According to local authorities, residents in areas near the border have been advised to leave, while flames and smoke are moving toward the German town of Monschau.
Flames moving toward the German border
The municipality of Monschau, a German town near the border with Belgium, has urged residents to evacuate endangered areas because of the massive fire engulfing a forest on the Belgian side.
According to the municipal authority, the fire front was around 1.5 kilometers from the German border and 1.8 kilometers from the nearest inhabited area. That assessment shows the threat is no longer being seen as distant, but as immediate for communities near the border line.
Firefighters on the ground through the night
Firefighters worked throughout the night in an effort to bring the flames under control, in what Belgian authorities have described as the largest forest fire in the country’s history.
According to the official version, the fire broke out around midday on Friday in the mountainous Fagnes nature park in western Belgium and then moved in the direction of Germany. Belgian local authorities said 30,000 hectares have been destroyed.
The danger is not limited to the flames
Even if the fire does not enter German territory, the municipality of Monschau warned of significant air pollution caused by the smoke.
For a town of around 12,000 residents, this warning shifts the threat beyond the fire line itself, directly affecting the health and safety of people living in areas near the border.
Evacuations on the Belgian side as well
On the Belgian side, authorities have already ordered the evacuation of the town of Kuchelscheid.
The town is about a 10-minute drive from Monschau, showing that the situation on the ground is being treated as a real emergency and not merely as a routine precautionary measure.
The scale of the fire and its proximity to inhabited areas have turned the border between Belgium and Germany into a pressure point for emergency services.
So far, the evacuation calls and air pollution warnings remain the clearest signs that local authorities are assessing the situation as serious.
