After about a month on the run, police in Sarandë say they have arrested 30-year-old Mariglen Kondi, suspected of attempting to abduct a young woman from Nepal near the Qafë Botë customs crossing. According to the official version, the young man was captured in the city at around midday today.
Arrest near the city stadium
According to police, the operation was carried out in Neighborhood No. 4 of Sarandë, near the city stadium, where the detention of the 30-year-old from Salaria, Tepelenë, was made possible.
Authorities said he had been wanted since the beginning of the month, while the arrest comes several weeks after the reported incident.
What is alleged to have happened in Qafë Botë
According to information made public by police, the incident happened on July 2, at around 6:53 p.m., on the Konispol–Qafë Botë road, in the area known as “Postbllok.”
The official version says Kondi tried several times to force a girl from Nepal into a vehicle. The young woman, according to this version, managed to run away and later filed a report with police.
Identification and criminal record
Police say the 30-year-old was identified through security cameras. After that, he was declared wanted until today’s arrest.
The official statement also says that Mariglen Kondi has multiple criminal precedents. He was arrested in 2020 for “cultivation of narcotic plants” in cooperation and was later placed under the security measure of “house arrest.”
Breach of security measure and previous arrest
According to police, while he was under “house arrest,” the 30-year-old violated that security measure.
Authorities further say that he was arrested again in 2021, this time for the theft of several pickup trucks in Lushnjë.
The case once again raises questions about the ability of institutions to prevent and quickly pursue people with criminal records, especially when security measures and documented arrests had previously been imposed on them.
So far, the 30-year-old faces the suspicions reported by police of attempted abduction, while the case is expected to be handled through the relevant legal procedures.
