The US-EU clash risks moving from fines against technology giants to trade tariffs. Donald Trump reacted sharply to the European Commission’s decision to fine Alphabet, Google’s parent company, warning of an economic response against the European Union.

Trump threatens the EU with new tariffs after the €890 million fine against Google

Trump calls the EU decision illegal and unethical

After the multimillion-euro fine imposed by Brussels on Google, US President Donald Trump said the EU would face trade consequences. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote that the European Union would pay “a very high price” for what he described as illegal and extremely unethical behavior.

Washington warns of an investigation and tariff measures

According to the official version from Washington, the US administration will launch an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. This instrument gives the US government room to take action against practices it considers unjustified, unreasonable, or discriminatory, including new customs tariffs.

Trump framed the issue as a case of what he calls “extortion” against American companies, turning a regulatory dispute into an open trade conflict with the EU.

Section 301 has already been used against trading partners

The threat does not come in a vacuum. Based on the same section, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday, July 22, imposed new tariffs on around 60 trading partners.

According to the reasoning of the US authorities, those countries had not taken sufficient measures against forced labor. This shows that the section in question is being used in practice as a tool of trade pressure and not only as a political warning.

Why the EU fined Google

The European Commission on July 22 imposed a fine of €890 million on Google. According to the Commission, the company had violated EU rules aimed at limiting dominant market power by major technology giants.

At its core, there are two narratives around the same decision: on one hand, Brussels presents it as enforcement of competition rules; on the other, Washington treats it as a blow to the interests of American corporations. It is precisely this clash of interests that is pushing the debate toward tariffs and trade retaliation.

If Trump’s threat materializes, the issue will no longer remain limited to digital market rules, but could directly affect trade relations between the United States and the European Union.

For now, what is known is that the fine against Google has opened a new front of transatlantic tension, with consequences that could go beyond the technology sector.
