A serious case reported in California has brought renewed attention to the safety of minors in treatment and detention institutions. A 26-year-old psychologist is accused of sexually abusing her patient, in a relationship that prosecutors say began while he was still a minor.
Multiple charges against the 26-year-old
Sofia Ann-Buitron Drotts, 26, of San Francisco, was charged on Monday with several criminal offenses. They include unlawful sexual intercourse, sending harmful material to minors, and possession of child pornography.
The case raises serious questions about how professional staff working with minors are vetted in sensitive parts of the system.
Suspicions linked to a juvenile detention center
According to authorities, Drotts had worked as a mental health psychologist at the John Davis Juvenile Detention Center, where the minor had been assigned to her as a client.
Prosecutors allege that the sexual relationship between them began in April and continued until July 14, the date she was arrested by police following information provided by a supervisor in the county Probation Department.
Family lawsuit adds suspicions of a longer period
The case took on added weight after the teenager’s family filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging that the young man had been molested for nearly two years.
According to the lawsuit filed by the family’s attorney, the alleged conduct began when the teenager was about 15 years old. The documents claim that the psychologist used her role as his therapist to create an inappropriate emotional bond with the minor.
Institutional responsibility also in focus
Beyond the criminal charges against the 26-year-old, the case is also putting pressure on the institutions responsible for supervising staff who work with minors in detention.
