A new incident near NATO’s eastern border has raised tensions in the region after an unidentified object fell on Polish territory overnight. The Polish government’s version is that all signs point to a Russian missile, but authorities said the full identification has not yet been completed.
Crater near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia
The object fell into a field in eastern Poland, near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia, around 100 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. According to Polish authorities, the impact created a crater about 10 meters wide.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, at the same time Russia was carrying out a massive attack on the Ukrainian city of Lviv. No casualties have been reported, but the incident has been treated as a serious security matter.
Tusk: Signs point to a Russian missile
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that, according to the government’s preliminary assessment, the object was very likely a Russian Kh-101 missile. He added that the authorities want full confirmation both on the type of missile and on the origin of the launch.
Tusk said he had earlier been in contact with other European leaders and that Poland was prepared to shoot down the object if it had continued flying toward endangered areas. According to him, the absence of casualties is also linked to the fact that the object did not fall in a populated area.
What the military and Ukraine reported
Polish Defense Minister Władysłaë Kosiniak-Kamysz said that around 20 objects had been detected near Polish airspace during the night. According to the official version, analyses are continuing to determine the exact identity of the object that fell near Tarnawa Kolonia.
Earlier, Ukraine’s acting foreign minister, Andriy Sybiha, said that a Russian Kh-101 missile had entered Polish airspace during the attack on Ukraine, violating NATO airspace.
Failed interception and alarm in the area
According to the Polish military, the object was detected at around 03:40 in the morning. An F-16 fighter jet was sent to intercept it, but the object disappeared from radar a few minutes later.
A military helicopter was then sent to the area for a ground inspection. Air raid sirens were heard in Lublin and Krasnystaw, while residents of Tarnawa Kolonia reported a loud explosion at around 04:00. Police found the impact site about an hour later.
A border that has seen incidents before
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022, several Russian drones and one Russian missile without a warhead have fallen on Polish territory.
The most serious case remains that of November 2022, when two Polish farmers lost their lives near the border with Ukraine. It was later assessed that the missile that killed them was a Ukrainian air defense missile, launched in response to a Russian attack.
The latest incident once again puts Poland in front of a direct test of border security, at a time when the war in Ukraine is increasingly producing consequences beyond the front line.
