The release of Ilir Beqaj from jail and his transfer to house arrest immediately became a subject of political clashes. Sali Berisha used the development to politically attack Edi Rama, with an ironic statement aimed at casting doubt on the majority’s relationship with its former officials who are accused or under investigation.
Political irony after the change in the security measure
During a conversation with followers on social media, Berisha focused on the decision to change the measure against former minister Ilir Beqaj from detention in prison to house arrest.
In his reaction, the chairman of the Democratic Party said sarcastically that it would not be surprising if Rama were to give Beqaj a “certificate of gratitude” as well, presenting the case as proof of double standards in relation to those in power.
Berisha’s statement about Rama
Berisha went even further in framing the political accusation, saying: “I guarantee you that after one week, two weeks, I guarantee you that Rama will hand him the certificate of gratitude.”
The statement remains part of the opposition’s political rhetoric and is not accompanied by any concrete fact or indication of such an action by the prime minister.
Beqaj’s release returns to the center of the debate
The change in the security measure for Ilir Beqaj has triggered strong political reactions, especially from the opposition, which has long used this case to raise questions about how justice functions when cases affect high levels of the former Socialist government.
In this case, Berisha linked the development not only to Beqaj’s figure, but also to the political responsibility that, according to him, weighs on Rama.
Call for participation in the protest
In the same communication, Berisha also addressed the national protest announced for today by the opposition.
Despite calls against him, he invited Democrats to take part in the rally, calling for political mobilization in the square.
Berisha’s reaction once again turns the Beqaj case into a direct front of confrontation between the opposition and the government.
Beyond the irony and political language, the debate remains focused on public perceptions of justice and on the way power deals with cases involving former senior officials.
