Another temperature record has been set in Slovakia as the heatwave bears down on Central Europe. According to the national meteorological service, the thermometer reached 42.2 degrees Celsius, the highest level ever recorded in the country.
The new record was registered in the south of the country
The highest temperature was measured on Wednesday in Dolné Plachtince, a village in southern Slovakia. According to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, the figure of 42.2°C surpassed the previous record of 41.4°C.
The old record had been registered just one day earlier in the southwest of the country, showing the unusual pace at which temperatures have been climbing this week.
Two records within June
According to official data, Slovakia’s record temperature has been broken twice during the month of June. This places the country among the areas most affected by the current heat episode in the region.
The rapid rise in temperatures is turning extreme heat from a temporary episode into a broader warning sign about severe weather in Central Europe.
Bratislava also experienced record temperatures
The capital, Bratislava, has also experienced record temperatures this week, according to Slovak meteorological authorities. The heat has directly affected residents’ daily lives, especially during daytime hours.
A 38-year-old man from Bratislava, Maros Danko, said he was spending more time at home than usual and avoiding going outside during the day because of the high temperatures.
The figures from recent days show that the heatwave is not remaining just a typical summer episode. In a few days, Slovakia has seen its historical temperature limits fall twice.
When records are broken at this speed, the alarm is not only about the weather of the day, but about the wider consequences that extreme heat brings for daily life and infrastructure.
