Tensions in Maliq Municipal Council as Majority Walks Out of Meeting on Territorial Reform

An extraordinary meeting convened at the Maliq Municipal Council turned into a political clash and ended without any decision-making. At the center was the position that was to be sent to Parliament on the review of the administrative-territorial division, but the session was quickly closed after left-wing councillors walked out of the hall.

Tensions in Maliq Municipal Council as the majority walks out of the meeting on Territorial Reform

The session lasted only 20 minutes

The meeting had been called to discuss Territorial Reform and to approve the official position of the Maliq Municipal Council, which would be sent to the Parliament of Albania as part of this process.

Instead of an institutional debate on an issue with implications for local governance, the session lasted about 20 minutes and ended without producing a formalized position.

The departure of left-wing councillors blocked the process

According to reporting from the scene, the meeting had been scheduled to take place at around 10:00. Before any decision could be made, the group of left-wing councillors declared that they would not express themselves through a vote on the proposal expected to be sent to Parliament.

Following this position, the head of the Municipal Council declared the meeting closed. Immediately afterward, the left-wing councillors emptied the hall within a few seconds, leaving the process interrupted midway.

Reactions from the opposition and citizens in the hall

The immediate closure of the session prompted reactions from opposition councillors and from citizens present in the hall. Footage shows that, even after the majority left, opposition representatives continued with their statements.

The incident also highlighted another common problem in local meetings: issues of public importance are handled in a climate of political confrontation, while real decision-making remains suspended.

Debate also with an elderly man who entered the hall

During the tensions, an elderly man with a cane also entered the hall, objecting to the closure of the meeting and arguing with the head of the Municipal Council.

His presence made the scene even more tense in a session that, at least officially, had been called over an administrative issue, but ended in open political confrontation.

The end of the meeting without a decision leaves the official position of the Maliq Municipal Council on Territorial Reform unresolved.

In practice, a process that was supposed to proceed through institutional debate and voting ended with walkouts from the hall, public objections and open tension between the sides.
