A statement by Erion Braçe has once again opened debate over how candidates are produced in the Socialist Party. The Socialist lawmaker, following Edi Rama’s meetings in Pogradec with party leaders and ministers, is calling for the name for Tirana City Hall not to come as a ready-made decision from above, but to go to a vote of the membership.
Braçe comes out openly for the race in Tirana
In his reaction on social media, Braçe not only reiterates his desire to run for mayor, but also puts the procedure at the center. He is calling for the selection of the candidate not to be reduced to a political announcement, but to be made through a voting process within the PS.
His position is being read as a direct objection to the model of centralized decision-making that for years has accompanied appointments and candidacies in the Socialist camp. At its core, Braçe is raising the question of whether the party base really has a role, or is simply notified of decisions taken earlier.
Clear signal after the meetings in Pogradec
The statement came immediately after Prime Minister Rama’s meetings in Pogradec with party leaders and ministers, at a time when names and signals are circulating within the PS about possible candidates in various municipalities.
Braçe speaks of reports that different figures within the party have been guided or told that they could be candidates. Even without mentioning a formal procedure, this version raises doubts about a process in which names are tested or blessed in advance by the political leadership, before the structures are genuinely consulted.
Clash with the idea of a predetermined candidacy
In Tirana’s case, Braçe’s reaction carries particular weight, as Rama has long made known his support for Ogerta Manastirliu. It is precisely here that the Socialist lawmaker draws the dividing line: in his view, the candidate for the capital should not emerge from a unilateral declaration, but from a vote.
“I do not prefer to be an announcement,” is one of the strongest phrases in his position. He goes on to say that neither the Socialists nor the citizens of Tirana should be presented with a name served up as a fait accompli.
What the Socialist lawmaker is really asking for
Braçe says the existence of several alternatives for Tirana is good news for the PS, because it can energize the party structures. He presents himself as one of those alternatives and stresses that he has begun working on ideas for the city, without waiting for personal approval from anyone.
In the vision he lays out, Tirana should be more livable, cleaner, greener and with more services, while he calls for active leadership of the municipality. But the political core of the message remains elsewhere: the candidacy, in his view, should be legitimized by a vote and not by vertical communication within the party.
Braçe’s statement brings to the surface a tension that is usually kept under control within the PS: whether the candidate for Tirana will be the product of an internal race or of a politically predetermined decision.
In a party where major decisions are often seen as concentrated in the hands of the chairman, the demand for a vote and not an “announcement” is more than a personal ambition. It is a test of how much space internal competition really has in one of the country’s most important political candidacies.
