La Masia continues to be sold as the ideal talent factory, but the reality of elite football is harsher than the myth built around the biggest academies. At Barcelona, for every name that breaks through, there are several others who remain only a promise.
The academy that creates huge expectations
During the latest transfer window, the usual debate in European football has resurfaced: should clubs trust players developed in their academy, or quickly cash in on them as soon as offers arrive?
Barcelona is one of the strongest cases in this discussion, because part of its identity has been built precisely on La Masia. Names such as Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi, Fermín López, Gerard Martín and Marc Bernal have emerged from the academy, and they have either taken or are trying to claim their place in the first team.
But La Masia’s fame also brings a heavy burden: almost every standout talent is labelled early as a future star. In practice, many of them fail to turn the initial hype into a sustainable career at the highest level.
Marc Guiu and a path that quickly became complicated
One of the most recent examples is Marc Guiu. The striker burst onto the scene at Barcelona during the period when the team was coached by Xavi, and he looked like a project with a clear long-term future.
However, he accepted Chelsea’s offer and left the Catalan club. Three years later, Guiu remains under contract with the London club, but without a guaranteed place in the first team, showing that a quick move to a big name does not necessarily bring consolidation.
Ansu Fati, from Messi’s successor to a painful departure
Ansu Fati’s case remains one of the most significant. At the moment of his breakthrough, he was seen as one of the biggest talents in world football and at Barcelona he was viewed as Lionel Messi’s successor.
Then came the injuries, especially the serious knee problem that radically changed his trajectory. After a loan spell at Brighton, Fati returned to Barcelona and received another opportunity from Hansi Flick, but in the end the club decided to close this chapter and the forward moved to Monaco.
Moriba, Aleñá, Deulofeu: big names, a more faded finish
Ilaix Moriba entered the first team at a difficult moment for Barcelona and immediately showed potential. But the decision to leave for RB Leipzig, in search of a faster route to the elite, did not produce what was expected. He later moved through Valencia, Getafe and Celta Vigo, while in recent years he has spent most of his time out on loan.
Carles Aleñá was another profile highly rated at La Masia. After a loan spell, he left Barcelona permanently and moved to Getafe. He currently plays for Alavés.
Gerard Deulofeu, once one of the academy’s most talked-about names, shone at youth level but never established himself in the first team. His career later took him through Everton, Sevilla, Milan, Watford and Udinese, and today he is without a club.
The list is longer than is usually acknowledged
Alen Halilovic, Riqui Puig and several other names also fit into the same picture, having at one point been seen as part of Barcelona’s future. Halilovic arrived with huge expectations from Dinamo Zagreb, but he never justified the potential attributed to him. At the age of 30, he has played for more than 10 clubs.
Riqui Puig, a name that generated huge excitement among fans, played for the first team but did not manage to become an undisputed starter. In the end, he chose MLS and is now preparing for his fourth season with LA Galaxy.
The list also includes names such as Adama Traoré, Isaac Cuenca, Cristian Tello, Héctor Bellerín, Sergi Samper, Martín Montoya and Munir El Haddadi. They had respectable careers, but not the level projected for them when they emerged from the academy.
La Masia continues to produce talented footballers, but Barcelona’s history shows that the academy is no guarantee of major success.
Amid the noise, the expectations and the rushed decisions, many of the talents proclaimed as the club’s heirs ultimately became examples of paths that never ended as promised.
