A statement by Commissioner Marta Kos on respecting The Hague’s decision regarding KLA leaders has prompted a strong reaction from Richard Grenell, the former U.S. envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue. In his view, the process does not represent justice, but a political distortion of European institutions.
Grenell’s sharp reaction on social media
Grenell reacted on social media immediately after Marta Kos’s statement, in which she called for respect for The Hague’s decision on KLA leaders.
He openly opposed that position and described it as shameful to keep someone in prison for six years over events that, according to the claim raised in the proceedings, are connected to 25 years ago.
Political accusations against European institutions
In his reaction, Grenell wrote that Europe should reform its institutions and policies.
According to him, this is not a case of justice, but “elite activism,” shifting the debate from the specific decision to the way the European structures that support this process function.
Call to halt funding
Grenell went even further, calling this another stain on Europe.
He called for funding for what he described as “radical courts” to be cut off immediately, a statement that raises the political temperature around an issue already highly sensitive for Kosovo and its relationship with international justice.
The verbal clash between a former senior American official and an important European voice shows that the issue of The Hague continues to be treated not only as a judicial process, but also as an open political battle over the legitimacy of the very institutions that support it.
