An urgent interpellation on the state of healthcare turned into a political clash in Parliament after the opposition raised accusations over shortages in services and question marks over procurement, while Minister Klodiana Spahiu defended herself with a promise of “transparency” and weekly appearances in sessions.
Opposition: the system is in a serious condition
Democratic Party MP Bardh Spahia said the request for the interpellation came because of a situation that, according to him, is extremely serious in the healthcare system.
He spoke of a lack of medicines, equipment and services, claiming that citizens are directly feeling the burden of problems in hospitals and health centers. Along the same lines, he accused ministers in this sector of having been replaced without leaving a trace and without bearing political responsibility.
Allegations over tenders and the resignation of Minister Sala
In the session, Bardh Spahia also linked the debate to the resignation of Minister Sala, which he said happened without a public explanation.
He raised suspicions over 12 services authorized for tenders worth 105 million euros within six weeks, and asked whether oversight of these procurements had been part of the clash within the Ministry of Health. These remain political allegations voiced by the opposition during the interpellation and not proven facts established in the parliamentary chamber.
Spahiu rejects the opposition’s picture
Minister Klodiana Spahiu responded by calling, in her words, for a standard of discussion “with transparency and facts,” while defending the official position that the healthcare system has made progress compared with 2012.
She said the Ministry of Health is ready to provide clarifications and said she would appear every week in Parliament for interpellation. In her remarks, the minister also engaged in tense exchanges with the chamber as she insisted that the problems in the system are deeper and cannot be compared without taking into account the situation in past years.
Debate highlights the issue of public accountability
Beyond the harsh tone, Thursday’s interpellation brought to the surface an issue that directly affects citizens: how healthcare services and public money are being administered in a sector where complaints about shortages are constant.
The government speaks of improvement and transparency, while the opposition speaks of corruption, centralized procurement and the degradation of the system. What is still missing is a full and verifiable answer to the claims over tenders, institutional responsibilities and the real standard of service received by patients.
The interpellation did not produce full clarifications on the most debated points, especially procurement and the reasons for the changes at the top of the ministry.
In the end, the clash left open the core of the issue: whether healthcare is being managed according to measurable public standards, or through political justifications that change from one minister to the next.
