The victim was a laboratory technician

The woman who died has been identified as Daria Shipilova, 28, who worked as a laboratory technician at the Plague Research Institute in Irkutsk.

According to reports circulating in Russia, it is suspected that she contracted the infection during her work, after a test tube containing dangerous biological material may have broken in the laboratory.

Around 200 people were placed in quarantine

Authorities have isolated up to 200 people who may have had contact with the 28-year-old, a measure that shows the scale of alarm following the fatal case.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, there was no immediate official statement from the Russian Ministry of Health, leaving room for questions over institutional transparency in the handling of the case.

The first announcement came from a neighboring region

Earlier, the governor of Buryatia, Alexei Chidenov, said on social media that a woman in the neighboring Irkutsk region had died from plague.

This announcement preceded the confirmations circulating in the media, while the full official version of the circumstances of the infection remains unclear.

What pneumonic plague is

Plague is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. According to the World Health Organization, the pneumonic form is highly contagious and can be fatal if not treated immediately.

The case in Irkutsk has renewed attention on the risk of incidents in laboratories that handle high-risk pathogens, especially when public information remains fragmented.

So far, public information has relied mainly on media reports and partial announcements from local officials.

This makes the need for full clarification even more pressing on how the exposure happened and whether laboratory safety protocols were followed.
