Berisha after appearing at the Special Court: SPAK accused of silence over the new law

Political reaction after the procedure at the Special Court

The leader of the Democratic Party spoke to the media after the completion of the mandatory appearance procedure at the Special Court, with a harsh statement against the government and justice institutions.

Berisha claimed that a climate of paralysis is being created in the justice system and that prosecutorial bodies are avoiding a response to the latest legal changes voted through by the majority.

Accusation against SPAK over silence

At the center of his statement was SPAK, which according to Berisha’s account is remaining silent in the face of a law that, he said, harms the process of investigation and prosecution.

He presented this silence as a sign of institutional compromise, raising political accusations of a growing closeness between justice structures and the government. These remain political claims made by the opposition leader and were not accompanied by new public evidence in this appearance.

Claims of interference in investigations and restrictions on the media

Berisha went further when he said that the legal changes, in his view, restore restrictions that also affect the media’s role in informing the public.

He also objected to the way in which, according to him, investigative procedures and the relationship between the prosecutor and the judge could be affected. In his statement, these changes were presented as interference that undermines the balance in criminal proceedings.

He also mentions the Council of Europe

In the same appearance, Berisha said he had been informed from Strasbourg that the Council of Europe does not agree with the changes made and has not given its approval for them.

For this part of the statement, no document or official reaction was presented or cited on the spot, while the claim was used by Berisha to reinforce his accusation that the majority is pushing forward changes that are contested outside the country as well.

Berisha’s statement comes at a time when the debate over justice remains politically charged and every legal change is read beyond legal technique, as part of the clash among the government, the opposition and the new prosecutorial institutions.

So far, SPAK has not made any public response to the accusations raised in this appearance by the Democratic leader.
