The attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has heightened fears of an even more dangerous phase of the conflict in the region. The toll confirmed by Saudi authorities stands at 12 dead and 309 injured, while political and military reactions are pushing the situation toward a new escalation.

Riyadh airport attack kills 12, raises tensions as UN warns of escalation

Heavy toll and suspension of airport operations

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authorities confirmed that the attack struck the passenger terminal at the capital’s airport, leaving 12 dead and hundreds injured. According to the official account, some of the wounded are in critical condition.

The victims include a US citizen. After the strike, operations at the airport were temporarily suspended as authorities began assessing the damage at one of the most sensitive points of Saudi civilian infrastructure.

Riyadh blames the Houthis, but responsibility remains publicly unconfirmed

The Saudi-led military coalition, which backs Yemen’s internationally recognized government, attributed the attack to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki described the strike on the passenger terminal as a “war crime.”

On the other hand, according to international reports cited in the original report, the Houthi rebels had not publicly claimed responsibility for the attack on Riyadh airport. That still leaves room for questions over the full version of events, despite the harsh tone of Saudi statements.

Threat of retaliation and signals from Washington

Saudi Arabia has warned of a firm response against those behind the attack. The rhetoric used by the Saudi coalition suggests the strike could be used as grounds for a new military retaliation.

Washington also issued a strong reaction. US President Donald Trump condemned the attack and said he would speak with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Asked whether the United States could join Saudi Arabia in strikes against the Houthis, he did not rule out such a possibility, saying the matter would be considered.

UN raises alarm over regional security

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg described the attack as a serious escalation. According to him, such strikes on civilian targets directly threaten security in the region and deepen the cycle of violence.

Grundberg called on the Houthi rebels to halt attacks on civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, stressing the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. The UN warning comes at a time when diplomatic efforts on Yemen remain fragile.

US embassy tightens security measures

After the attack, the US embassy in Saudi Arabia raised the alert level for its citizens. The official notice said restrictions had been imposed on US personnel at the Saudi airports of Jeddah and Dammam.

US government employees must also obtain special authorization to use King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, as well as the airports in Jeddah and Dammam. Such measures show the incident is not being treated as isolated, but as a development with potentially broader consequences for regional security.

The attack in Riyadh is pushing still further a region already burdened by proxy wars, state rivalries and statements of military revenge.

If the Saudi side’s accusations are followed by retaliation, and if the United States moves from statements to direct involvement, the risk of the conflict widening becomes significantly higher.
