Protesters gathered again in Tirana as part of their ongoing rally, which according to the organizers has entered its 91st day. The gathering took place at the podium set up near the Prime Minister’s Office.
During the rally, speeches were delivered and calls for revolution were voiced, in rhetoric that continues to target the political classes as a whole.
Clash over the protest’s leadership
Part of the attention focused on Dritan Goxhaj’s reaction to a statement by Alfred Cako, who had called for the protest to have someone at its head.
Goxhaj dismissed this idea from the podium, declaring that the protest has no leader and will have no leader. His stance aims to preserve the rally’s profile as a movement without a single leading figure.
The march continued through the capital’s streets
After the speeches, the protesters continued their program with a march through the streets of Tirana. The gathering, at least from what was shown publicly, remained focused on political opposition and on rejecting a declared hierarchy within the protest.
On its 91st day, the gathering outside the Prime Minister’s Office is trying to maintain the same pace and the same message, while the internal debate over leadership appears to be coming out into the open.
Beyond the statements from the podium, it remains to be seen whether a protest that publicly rejects centralized leadership can preserve its political and organizational cohesion going forward.
