An escape involving serious security concerns has been reported in Greece, where 41-year-old Gentian Çipi from Korça managed to evade police from the Serres hospital. The case brings renewed attention not only to the criminal profile of the escapee, but also to questions over how security was breached at an institution under police supervision.
Who is Gentian Çipi
Gentian Çipi, 41, born in Korça and residing in Dishnicë, has been identified as the inmate who escaped last night from the Serres hospital in Greece.
He has a criminal record in both Albania and Greece. In Albania, in July 2024, he was sentenced to two years in prison for the criminal offense of destruction of property by fire, committed in cooperation and under aggravating circumstances.
The case file in Albania and reduced measures
In this case, he was initially investigated under the measure of “arrest in prison,” but the court later reduced the measure to “ban on leaving the country” and “financial guarantee.”
The charge was linked to the burning of a vehicle on April 24, 2023, in Neighborhood 13 on “Loni Grazhdani” street in Korça. This detail once again raises debate over the real effect of lighter security measures for people with problematic records.
From illegal cameras to the attack in Thessaloniki
Çipi’s name had appeared earlier as well, in January 2023, when during Operation “Fijet” police initiated proceedings against him after illegally installed cameras were found near his home.
On September 3, 2024, according to Greek authorities, he opened fire in the Pylaia area of Thessaloniki, attempting to kill a 25-year-old Greek man outside a canteen. The young man was wounded by three bullets but survived, while Çipi fled the scene.
The operation in Greece and police accusations
According to the Greek police version, Çipi was identified and an arrest operation was organized against him in September 2025. In the same action, Enea Basholli, 31, and Kleo Topa, 24, both from Korça, were also arrested.
Greek authorities claim that Çipi was the head of a criminal group involved in drug trafficking and violent acts. During the intervention in Thessaloniki, according to police, he and Topa did not obey the order to stop, increased speed and rammed a police vehicle before abandoning their car and fleeing on foot.
A few hours later they were captured, while Basholli was also arrested in Halkidiki. During searches, Greek police said they seized a Kalashnikov with 30 rounds, three pistols, a silencer, about 31 kilograms of marijuana, a fake passport, a fake driver’s license, 23,350 euros, mobile phones and three vehicles.
The latest escape from the Serres hospital brings the case back to another level of alarm, this time over the failure of supervision of a person said to have been involved in several serious criminal episodes.
While Greek authorities are expected to provide more clarifications on how the escape was carried out, Çipi’s profile shows that he is a name well known to police on both sides of the border.
