EU Commissioner Meets Rama: Albania “Belongs in the Union,” but Irreversible Results Are Required

European Union Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law Michael McGrath held a meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana, where the focus was on Albania’s progress toward the EU. The public message was supportive, but not without conditions: according to the European official, the pace of reforms must translate into sustainable results.

EU Commissioner meets Rama: Albania ‘belongs in the union,’ but irreversible results are required

A pro-integration message, with the condition of results

After the meeting with the head of government, McGrath said that Albania “belongs in the EU” and is among the countries leading the process of admission to the union.

He stressed that the final objective is visible, but underlined that important work still remains to be done. According to him, the European Union will continue to support Albania throughout this process.

Justice and the rule of law in focus

According to the statement published by McGrath, the discussion with Rama focused on the implementation of justice reforms and the rule of law, areas he described as essential to the membership process.

This is a clear signal that, despite the encouraging tone, Brussels continues to tie Albania’s progress to concrete evidence in the most sensitive institutional sectors.

Recognition of progress, but not a blank check

The European commissioner spoke of a “strong story of progress” and of “clear ambition,” giving the Albanian government a positive assessment on the political level.

However, the emphasis placed on “irreversible results” shows that supportive statements do not replace the demand for real implementation. In essence, Brussels’ message remains that progress is measured by results and not only by rhetoric.

McGrath’s statements confirm the EU’s political support for Albania’s European path, but also the union’s usual reservation when it comes to rule-of-law standards.

Beyond the optimistic wording, the weight of the process remains on what Albanian institutions are able to deliver in practice.
