A police intervention at the headquarters of opposition television channel Halk TV in Istanbul has raised new questions about the state of media freedom in Turkey, after the channel’s live broadcast was cut and its administration was placed under control appointed by the authorities.

Police operation in the early morning hours
According to Turkish media, police forces entered Halk TV’s main building at around 05:30 in the morning and carried out checks on the television station’s premises.
During the operation, the street in front of the building was blocked, while the police presence prevented normal entry to the headquarters.
The television station announced the broadcast interruption
Halk TV itself said on platform X that police were inside the building and that an administrator had been appointed to take over management of the station.
In the same statement, the television channel said live broadcasts had been interrupted, confirming that the channel’s editorial and technical control had been immediately affected by the intervention.
Footage from outside and the moment of the interruption
Videos are circulating on social media showing Halk TV employees gathered outside the building, while police, according to those videos, are not allowing them to enter.
Another video published online shows the moment the channel’s program is suddenly interrupted during the broadcast.
Political reactions and accusations of pressure on the press
According to reports from Turkey, the channel’s general news director, Suat Toktas, tried to secure the continuation of broadcasting by contacting the appointed administrator, but without result.
The development has triggered political reactions in the country. Opposition representatives have denounced the intervention as a blow to press freedom, while the official version from the authorities has been accompanied by claims of financial issues.
The intervention at one of the best-known media outlets close to the opposition further deepens the debate over the limits of state power over critical media in Turkey.
So far, there are no further official details clarifying how long the measure will last and what consequences it will have for the continuation of the television station’s activity.
