Rama Rules Out Resignation Amid Protests, Promises 2027 Budget Measures for Students

Prime Minister Edi Rama has publicly rejected any possibility of resignation as violent protests have dominated recent weeks in the capital. In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, he defended the position that a government does not leave through pressure in the streets, but only through elections, while on the other hand offering as a political response the promise of new measures in the 2027 budget.

Resignation off the table, according to Rama

According to the version presented by the head of government, the mandate the majority received last year remains the basis on which he intends to continue governing. Rama said that a call for resignation can be made in a democratic system, but not imposed through violence.

He presented his position as a defense of democratic order and the electoral mandate, insisting that he will not retreat in the face of pressure from a minority that, according to him, is seeking power through escalation in the streets.

How the government distinguishes the protesters

In the interview, Rama makes a clear distinction between students and young people who, according to him, are seeking more opportunities, and groups he describes as violent. He linked these acts to individuals who, according to his claim, have ties to the Antifa movement.

This is a political label coming from the prime minister himself and, in the statements made, it was not accompanied by evidence publicly presented in the interview. Nevertheless, Rama uses this distinction to argue that social discontent should not be confused with violence against institutions and property.

The 2027 budget used as a response to discontent

Faced with concerns over education, the cost of living and the lack of real opportunities for young people, Rama said the government will soon present the 2027 budget with additional measures for families, public services and students.

At this stage, no concrete details of these measures have been made public, so it remains to be seen whether this is real support with calculated costs or a political response to the protest climate. So far, the declaration remains at the level of a promise.

Dialogue offered, but tension remains

The prime minister said he has invited students and teachers to an open dialogue and that he is ready to consider serious proposals, including those coming from the government’s harshest critics.

At the end of the interview, Rama acknowledged that not everything in Albania has been done well, but again returned the emphasis to condemning violence. This suggests that the government is trying to keep the debate between two axes: the offer of dialogue and the categorical refusal of any pressure coming from the street.

Rama’s position makes clear that the government does not see a crisis of legitimacy, but rather a confrontation that requires political management and public order.

The question mark remains over the concrete content of the 2027 budget and whether the offered dialogue will produce solutions beyond public statements.
