PSG have won the UEFA Super Cup again, this time after a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in Strasbourg. The match was decided by key moments, with one goal confirmed by VAR and the English side staying in the game until the final seconds.
The French side started the final better
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute, when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia broke into the box and finished accurately for 1-0. The French side had entered the match better and created pressure in the opposition area in the opening minutes as well.
Earlier, Aston Villa tried from distance through João Gomes, but his effort went wide of the target. At the other end, PSG also had a good chance with Mendes, but the move was not finished.
Aston Villa responded before the break
The English side did not fall out of the game and found the equaliser at the end of the first half. In the 45th minute, after a cross from John McGinn, Brian Madjo struck accurately and sent the ball into the net for 1-1.
Moments earlier, the same Madjo had gone close to scoring, first with an effort that hit the post and then with another attempt that went over the target.
VAR confirmed the key moment of the second half
In the 61st minute, Désiré Doué scored PSG’s second goal after a favourable situation in front of the goalkeeper. Initially, the move was stopped for offside, but after a VAR review, the goal was deemed valid and the French side regained the lead.
Aston Villa also had a response early in the second half, when McGinn got into the box and tried with his left foot, but Safonov managed to stop the shot.
Pressure at the end and a decisive intervention
One of the moments that kept PSG in front came in the 74th minute, when Warren Zaïre-Emery intervened at the right time to block João Gomes’ shot, after an uncertain save by Safonov.
In stoppage time, Aston Villa also tried through Buendia with a header, but his attempt went wide of the target. PSG held on to the 2-1 result and lifted the trophy after a hard-fought final that remained alive until the end.
With this success, PSG win the UEFA Super Cup for the second year in a row and confirm their consistency on the continental stage.
For Aston Villa, the final remained open until the end, but not the result. The English side created chances and reacted well in several moments, without managing to overturn the outcome of the evening in Strasbourg.
