A shooting attack in southern Spain has left four people dead and two injured, in an incident that, according to the authorities’ preliminary account, may be linked to clashes between criminal clans. Among the dead are a pregnant woman, the eight-month-old baby she was carrying, her mother, and a 16-year-old who, according to the initial investigation, does not appear to have been connected to the conflict.
The attack in Isla Cristina
The incident happened on the evening of Sunday, August 16, at around 10:00 p.m., in the El Rocio neighborhood of Isla Cristina, in the province of Huelva. According to the Guardia Civil’s preliminary reconstruction, two masked individuals traveling on a motorbike opened fire on a group of people.
After the attack, the assailants are suspected of having set the motorbike on fire and abandoned it in a pine area near the Giralda campsite before fleeing the scene.
The victims and the injured
Among the victims was a 39-year-old pregnant woman, the eight-month-old baby she was carrying, and her 62-year-old mother. A 16-year-old was also killed, and the preliminary investigation suggests he may have been innocent in this conflict.
An 18-year-old was also seriously wounded in the shooting and is in hospital in very critical condition. Another man suffered lighter injuries.
Lines of inquiry
Huelva’s deputy government representative spoke of a possible revenge attack between clans, but investigators have not ruled out any line of inquiry. According to the Guardia Civil, the two women who were killed are believed to have been the mother-in-law and sister of a man with a criminal record known by the nickname “El Baba.”
According to the authorities, this man is also suspected of having been involved in another shooting attack in September 2024 in an area near Huelva, in which one person was killed and two others were injured. Investigators suspect that incident may have marked the start of a chain of armed clashes between clans.
Checks and investigation
The seriously wounded 18-year-old is believed to be a nephew of “El Baba,” a detail that could strengthen the score-settling theory, although the authorities have not yet reached official conclusions.
Police have seized footage from the campsite’s security cameras and stepped up checks across the municipality, including around the cemetery where funeral ceremonies are taking place. The investigation is being led by the judicial authorities and is under seal, while efforts continue to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
The incident has shocked Isla Cristina and once again highlighted armed violence that, according to the authorities’ investigative line, may be linked to old criminal conflicts.
So far, an important part of the sequence of events remains at the level of investigative suspicion, while the perpetrators are still on the run.
