A grave incident has raised serious questions over medical treatment at the Pogradec maternity hospital, after a 36-year-old woman, seven months pregnant, lost her life while being transported for specialized care. According to the official version, criminal proceedings have been registered against three doctors at this maternity hospital.

Criminal proceedings after death during transport
Police said the case materials were referred to the Korça Prosecutor’s Office, which has launched criminal proceedings for the offense of “Negligence in medical treatment” against three doctors at the Pogradec maternity hospital: Blerta Delija, Saimir Çela and Anri Topi.
Those placed under investigation are B. D., 35, a resident of Elbasan, as well as A. T., 40, and S. Ç., 34, both residents of Pogradec, all three serving as doctors at the city’s maternity hospital.
How the incident is presented in the official version
According to police, on the evening of August 30, the 36-year-old woman with the initials M. K. arrived at the Pogradec maternity hospital in poor health.
After being examined by the three doctors, she was sent by ambulance for specialized medical care to a maternity hospital in Tirana.
Deterioration on the road and stop in Elbasan
According to the same version, the woman’s condition worsened during transport, causing the ambulance to divert to the maternity hospital of Elbasan hospital.
There, doctors confirmed the death of the 36-year-old woman. No further public explanations have so far been given about her clinical condition, the reason for the transfer, or the medical decision-making followed before departure.
What remains to be clarified
The opening of the criminal investigation shows that the case is not being treated simply as a fatality during transport, but as an incident in which it is being verified whether there was negligence in medical treatment.
At this stage, the authorities have not made other elements from the case file public, while specific responsibilities remain to be determined by the investigation of the Korça Prosecutor’s Office.
The death of a pregnant woman on the way for treatment has once again put the chain of decision-making in obstetric emergencies and response standards in regional hospitals at the center of attention.
For now, the only step officially confirmed is the criminal proceeding against three doctors at the Pogradec maternity hospital.
