A distinctive name in contemporary literature

Carson, 76, is known for a body of work that blends poetry, prose, translation and classical studies. It is precisely this hybrid approach that has for years made her one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary literature.

In its reasoning, the Swedish Academy described the author’s work as a fresh intervention in the forms of literary writing, stressing that she has created new ways of expression in relation to tradition and modernity.

The Academy’s official assessment

According to the Academy’s official version, the prize was awarded to Carson for “her bold and innovative work, which, in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”.

Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel Committee for Literature, praised the fact that Carson has broken away from the model of lyric poetry closely tied to autobiographical narrative and has helped open up new literary forms. According to him, her writing moves between classical and modern poetry, as well as among different artistic genres.

From translating ancient Greek to her best-known works

Beyond poetry and essays, Carson has translated works of ancient Greek literature and has worked for more than three decades as a professor of classics. This academic background can also be seen in the way she constructs her texts, where classical references and formal experimentation move in parallel.

Among her best-known titles are “The Glass Essay”, “Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse”, “Nox”, “Float” and “The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos”.

What the prize is worth and how the announcement was made

The Nobel Prize in Literature recognizes an entire body of work and remains one of the highest honors in the world of books. The winner receives 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately £900,000 or $1.2 million.

Swedish Academy permanent secretary Ingrid Carlberg said she called Carson shortly before the public announcement. According to her, the author was in Iceland at the moment she received the news.

With this prize, Anne Carson is confirmed as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary literature, especially for the way she has moved uncompromisingly between poetry, critical thought and the classical heritage.

The Swedish Academy’s decision places her name among authors who have left their mark not only through themes, but also through the form of their writing.
