One day after the attack that killed 12

The reported strike comes just one day after another deadly attack at the same airport, where 12 people were reported killed and more than 300 injured. Saudi authorities attributed that attack to the Houthi rebels, although the group did not clearly claim responsibility for Saturday’s episode.

In recent days, the same airport has been hit several times. On October 8, according to reports, two other attacks caused casualties and also damaged a Saudia aircraft, while strikes have also been reported at other Saudi airports, including Abha.

Threats to civil aviation and the official response

Yemen’s Houthis have stepped up their rhetoric toward Saudi aviation infrastructure, warning airlines, employees and travelers to avoid the country’s airports and airspace. The group’s military spokesman, Yahya Sari, had said earlier that Saudi airports were already “exposed to attacks,” with the exception of those in Mecca and Medina.

On the other hand, the Saudi-led coalition has described the attack as a terrorist act and a war crime. This is Riyadh’s official version, while on the ground the conflict is entering a phase in which civilian targets and infrastructure with economic weight are increasingly being targeted.

Cancelled flights and impact beyond the airport

After the successive attacks, several airlines have cancelled flights to and from Riyadh. Among them are Kuwait Airways, Etihad and Qatar Airways, while flydubai has announced the cancellation of flights to Riyadh and Abha until October 14.

The tension has also begun to affect daily life in the Saudi capital. According to reports, authorities have temporarily shifted schools to distance learning, while restrictions on airport operations are continuing after the latest strikes.

Regional escalation and pressure on Saudi security

International analyses view this wave of attacks as more than an isolated episode of the war in Yemen. Strikes on airports, energy infrastructure and air links are directly affecting Saudi Arabia’s image as a safe hub for business and transport.

At the same time, according to international reports, Saudi Arabia is facing pressure on air defense and has asked for more interceptor missiles from the United States and Western allies. This pushes the conflict beyond Yemen’s borders and places the security of civil aviation at the center of the crisis.

The latest reported strike in Riyadh and the suspension of flights show that the conflict is no longer remaining only on the traditional front line, but is shifting toward the most sensitive nodes of civilian and economic life in Saudi Arabia.

This is precisely where the real weight of this escalation lies: not only in the immediate damage, but in the fact that airports and air traffic are becoming targets with much wider regional consequences.
